Coronary Heart Disease There are over 50 million Americans per year who are affected by Coronary Heart Disease (CHD). CHD is a blocking or narrowing of the arteries from cholesterol plaque. Each year CHD will take half a million American lives. It is also the leading cause of death in the United States. There are a number of risk factors associated with CHD. These include hypertension, cigarette smoking, family history of CHD, and diabetes. Prevention of CHD calls for lifestyle changes. By monitoring diet and exercise and taking a clinical approach to measuring cholesterol levels, reduction in risk can take place. With proper diagnosis CHD can be effectively monitored and treated. Genzyme has been involved in providing products, which assist the physician in making the appropriate treatment decisions for measuring HDL and LDL cholesterol levels. Through proper monitoring and diagnosis a physician can identify the measures that a patient should take to decrease the chance of CHD. |
