Enteric Disease Enteric disease has a number of causes. The most common disorders of the gastro-intestinal tract are the result of infections by parasites, bacteria, or viruses. Diagnosing these complaints has traditionally required significant time and expertise. Enteric disease causing microorganisms are typically identified by meticulous microscopic examination of fixed and stained stool samples and/or by protracted culturing of fresh specimens in an array of precisely formulated media. Getting fast, accurate laboratory results is essential to diagnosing and treating enteric diseases. The quicker the cause can be identified, the faster the physician can initiate appropriate therapy. That is why Genzyme has focused on developing easy-to-use rapid tests to aid in diagnosing enteric diseases. One of our products, the Giardia/Cryptosporidium Rapid Assay, provides a fast, easy, and accurate method for determining a patient’s status for two of the most common enteric parasites found in patients in the United States and Europe, Giardia lamblia and Cryptosporidium parvum. To address the clinical laboratory’s continuing need for fast, accurate, and objective results, Genzyme is working on expanding our enteric disease product line to include unique rapid tests for diagnosing other enteric diseases including Helicobacter pylori and Clostridium difficile. |
