The Simple Facts

The new national coverage policies have been issued by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It can be said that approximately one-third of total U.S. healthcare expenditures are covered by the Medicare and Medicaid government programs. The Medicare and Medicaid programs are administered by the CMS agency through what are called Local Carriers. A Local Carrier is a private insurance company in a particular geographic area that the CMS will contract with in order to administer the Medicare and Medicaid programs to Medicare and Medicaid patients in that area. Typically, CMS will contract with one Local Carrier per state or per geographic region which may involve more than one state. Local Carriers will be required to follow the new guidelines, National Coverage Policies for Lipids, beginning in November of 2002.
